Nice to meet you!

I'm Sarah Cooper, LCSW, SEP

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Somatic Experiencing Practitioner

I've traveled a meandering road to become a therapist. This was not something I set out to do, but now that I'm here I love helping others find their inner strength and wisdom. I started out in grass roots social justice work and non-profits working with children and families from all walks of life. I took some detours to parent two kids (who are now young adults). I decided to pivot toward becoming a clinician after my own healing journey that started with postpartum depression and anxiety. Before private practice I worked with families in crisis, at a local women's mental health clinic, and at a large university counseling center.  Now I have the privilege of helping others in their healing journey in a way that feels authentic, deep, and connected. My practice is based on Somatic Experiencing and Polyvagal TheoryThese body-based, trauma informed approaches help you learn about how to regulate your autonomic nervous system and become more in touch with your body so that you don't simply live in your head. Other frameworks I often utilize are Self Compassion and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.  While I have continued work to do, I strive to be anti-racist and LGBTQIA+ affirming. I've lived in Charlottesville for 20 years and when I'm not at my office I might be spending time outdoors, enjoying live music, kayaking, snuggling with my two beagles, or taking a much needed nap.
